Do Psychic Abilities Run In Families?
By Savina Thompson
While there exists no empirical data to support a belief in the tendency of intuitive abilities to pass from one generation to the next, many of those within the professional psychic community have stories spanning generations, suggesting that the inheritance of intuitive abilities (also known as extrasensory perception or “e.s.p.”) may have as much to do with genetics as eye color and a predisposition toward certain illnesses.
A little Internet research turns up a multitude of accounts of psychic parents and grandparents having been the inspiration for a career in a metaphysically-related field. In fact, a common link among many professional mediums seems to be a close relationship with a grandparent, particularly one who also shared intuitive gifts. This isn’t surprising considering the nature of psychic abilities. Spiritual senses are as natural a part of the human animal as are the physical senses. For each physical sense there is a corresponding spiritual or “psychic” sense, so it would stand to reason that the strength of one’s abilities would depend greatly on the family genes. Just as with physical eyesight, an inclination toward a strong clairvoyant streak would most likely be passed down through generations.
While it’s far from clinical research, the professional psychic is privy to a number of patterns not witnessed by those outside of our field (simply because of the volume of people with whom we have contact and the personal nature of the information). Most are simply models of behavior, choices and life lessons, which provide proof of the interconnectedness of our experience here on earth. Some general patterns, though, suggest that strong intuitive abilities are passed down through family lines and that the occurrence of multiple gifted siblings within one family may be more common than one might think. Within my own practice, I’ve witnessed countless individuals whose abilities are shared by several family members, most often beginning with a grandmother or great grandmother, although they sometimes skip generations or particular individuals in a seemingly arbitrary manner.
The ability to perceive energies beyond those registered by the physical senses is inherent in all of us. However, for some families, the predisposition toward a special sensitivity is great.
